“Delegating risk management systematically” – Sopra Financial Technology presents provocative theories in the “Tech und Tacheles” podcast

News, 24/09/2025

Responsibility cannot be outsourced! This clear message kicks off the eighth episode of Tech & Tacheles. Uli Dörsam (Manager of Information Security & IT Risks and data protection officer, Helaba Invest) and Carsten Fritz (Product Owner Managed Application Service, Sopra Financial Technology) discuss how banks can outsource operational activities without relinquishing their responsibility.

Nuremberg, September 24, 2025 – The new episode focuses on the tension between duty and trust: Banks must manage risks themselves, but can outsource operational tasks to partners. What sounds like a contradiction quickly becomes a question of striking the right balance in the discussion.

Responsibility remains, trust is a duty

Risk management remains the responsibility of the banks. Uli Dörsam makes it clear: “I cannot outsource risk management, I am not allowed to outsource it. I have to manage my risks.” Carsten Fritz adds the service provider's perspective: “The responsibility I assume always remains. It is important to define this responsibility clearly when outsourcing—otherwise, a vacuum is created in the middle.”

Tools and rules of the game

Tools and service level agreements can help. However, the decisive factor remains how banks and partners distribute responsibilities and tasks. Fritz emphasizes: “If I choose the right tool, it can take a lot of work off my hands and make the result easier.” Thiel counters: “Simply selecting a tool will not enable us to reduce risks. Only its introduction and use create transparency.” Fritz adds: "A tool is not just a nice interface. It's about systematically controlling the entire information universe."

Service level agreements also make it clear that it's not just about technology, but about expectations and cooperation. Fritz sums it up: “SLAs are the foundation. We have to agree: What availability do we expect, do we need 24/7 – and what does that mean for price and performance?”

Communication is key

At the end of the discussion, Fritz draws a clear conclusion: “Communication is crucial—clarifying which tasks are delegated and which responsibilities remain. That is the basis for good service.”
